Every single species holds an importance for balancing ecosystem, so knowing their existence is important for conservation. It is said that almost 86% of land and 91% of aquatic species have not yet discovered. Every year scientists discover hundreds of new species of living organisms from bacterias, fungi, plants to insects, aquatic beings and even animal species. So, here is a list of 10 of those weird new species that were discovered in 2018.
Weird New Species Discovered in 2018
Parasitic Alien Wasp : Dolichogenidea xenomorph
Discovered here : The new species of Wasp was discovered from New South Wales, Australia. It is widely distributed in western Australia.
Features : The alien wasp got its name as xenomorph because of its weird behaviour like aliens of hollywood sci-fi movies. The wasp is a parasitoid, it attacks a caterpillar and ejects its eggs into the live creature. The eggs transforms into larvae inside the caterpillar and slowly eat it up, finally killing the caterpillar. The Parasitic Alien Wasp is considered as important for biologically controlling the pest population.
2. Neon Sea Slug : Hypsilodoris melanesica
Discovered here : These brightly coloured new species of sea slugs were discovered from coral reefs in the Indo-Pacific region.
Features : The Neon Sea Slugs are variably coloured from yellow, neon blue to mauve and other bright colours. Even different individuals from the same species display variations in colours and patterns. They are categorized under Nudibranchs, known for bright coloured bodies, which is referred as a way of mimicking other poisonous sea organisms so as to protect themselves from predators.
3. Star Tomato : Solanum kollastrum
Discovered here : The Solanum species was discovered from the Mucuri river delta in the Eastern Brazil. Also, it can be found on and around Inselbergs geological formations.
Features : The new species discovered has peculiarly long and dense prickles all around its stem. It has weird sticky hairs all around its leaf and flower. This plant’s flowers are vibrantly coloured. Its fruit is aromatic, attracting a wide range of wild animals and birds, especially bats.
4. Blue Throated Hillstar
Discovered here : This new species of hummingbird was discovered from higher elevations of Andes in Southwest Ecuador.
Features : The peculiar blue colour in the throat region of this bird gave it its name Blue Throated Hillstar. The species is documented to have less than 500 individuals, so is declared as critically endangered. Its habitat is threatened by mining, deforestation, grazing and forest fires.

5. Weird Truffle : Tuber brennemanii and T. floridanum
Discovered here : The Truffle species were found by two scientists while on a field survey of Pecan Trees in an orchard in Florida, USA.
Features : These truffles are edible but have stinky odour, as compared to their aromatic prized family members. They have weird interiors with chambers that look like half cut brain. Regardless of their awkward smell, they are eaten by wild pigs, squirrels and other wild animals.

6. Rote Leaf Warbler : Phyllascopus rottensis
Discovered here : The Rote Leaf Warbler was discovered from Rote Island which has dry monsoon conditions in Eastern Indonesia.
Features : The Rote Leaf Warbler is a songbird as like the other warblers. Apart, it has a peculiar long beak because of the adaptation to the dry climate of its habitat. Though, the bird was first seen and photographed in 2004 but further research led to the final documentation of the bird on 31st December 2017.
7. Snail Sucking Snake : Dipsas bobridgelyi
Discovered here : Five species of the same snake was discovered from Ecuador and Peruvian rainforests.
Features : These weird new species of snake have a modified set of jaws that help them to suck the slimy snails out of their shells. Fortunately they are venomless and don’t pose a threat to humans but because of deforestation and destruction of their habitat, the species are already declared endangered.
8. Water Beetle : Grouvellinus leonardodicaprioi
Discovered here : This water beetle species was discovered from a waterfall in the Maliau Basin in Malaysian Borneo jungle.
Features : Interestingly the new species of a tiny black water beetle is named after Leonardo di Caprio, for his active contributions in biodiversity conservations. He has a foundation that works for wildlife conservation, ocean and wildland conservation, and innovative projects. So, naming a species after him is a great tribute for his contributions.
9. Atlantic Forest Tree : Dinizia jueirana- facao
Discovered here : The new species of Atlantic Forest tree was discovered from Northern Espirito Santo, Brazil.
Features : The Atlantic Forest Tree has a limited population of only 25 individuals found only in the vicinity of the Reserva Natural Vale, Northern Espirito Santo, Brazil. The trees stand out in the dry deciduous riparian forest. The tree species is already considered under critically endangered species.
10. Blood Red Soft Coral : Thesea dailoi
Discovered here : The new species of coral was discovered from Hannibal Bank in the Pacific Panama coastal region. The reef is UNESCO World Heritage Site for being a biodiversity hotspot.
Features : The soft coral has a peculiar bright blood red colour. The species occurs in unusual depths where there is low to medium light scattering. The coral is described to have anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties making it very important for conservation.
